The Loreto´s contrasting natural surroundings turn a single trip into multiple adventures that can be done on foot, by bicycle, or on a modern all-terrain vehicle.

Loreto is framed by two natural beauties: on the one side, the stunning Gulf of California, once called the “the World’s Natural Aquarium” and, on the other, by the gorgeous Sierra de la Giganta, with its mountains, canyons and age-old cave paintings.

On Land

Connected with Beauty

Sierra de la Giganta is one of the most diverse orographic systems on the Baja California peninsula. Its combination of high peaks and deep canyons, as well as dry streambeds and estuaries, makes it perfect for nature lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts.

With extraordinary rock art sites, a hike along the rugged trails is not to be missed. The reward is incredible landscapes, with sunsets whose beauty defies reality.

The experiences change according to the transportation you choose. If you opt for hiking, you will discover that in the apparent silence of the desert, life flourishes in a different way, through endemic plants and animals that you will not see anywhere else.

For thrill seekers, a ride on a four-wheeler or mountain bike is a must. The different routes that start in Loreto and go deep into the mountains have a unique degree of difficulty, allowing you to challenge your skills for an extreme adventure.

Nostalgia for times past can also be experienced on the horseback rides, which take you across ranches and fords where history has been written with hard work, rooted in the timeless beauty of the area.

Or, find unexpected formations, such as basalt prisms formed by the volcanic pressure and the movement of the region’s tectonic plates 14 million years ago, or the most incredible rock paintings by the first settlers in the neighboring municipality of Comondú.

Time Travel

▀  The hard daily life of the region’s first inhabitants has given way to places that revive those daily tasks on ranches, where the kindness of the people serves as a balm to a completely rural way of life. Around the heart of Loreto, there are many spots where you can choose from various period experiences, such as making tortillas or dairy products, which, more than a trip to paradise, will take you on a journey through time.

For those who like responsible and controlled hunting, San Matías hunting ranch is a good alternative, while those who want to experience traditional foodways should visit Rancho San Felipe.

There are also numerous places where you can book lodgings under thousands of stars, perfect if you want to reconnect with nature in a space that has changed little with the passage of time.

At Sea

In the World’s Aquarium

▀  When Jacques Cousteau visited the Gulf of California, he was amazed and it’s no wonder: this is one of the places with the greatest marine biodiversity on the planet, which you can admire and protect.

The area’s warm temperatures and more than 800 species of fish that live in the bay, Bahía de Loreto, make it the perfect spot for diving all year round.

In fact, the one-of-a-kind views of its submarine canyons, rock formations, and colorful schools of fish make it one of the world’s favorite scuba diving sites.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
If swimming is your thing, you can do it surrounded by sea lions during the season when these friendly animals visit the region, which is known for its calm, crystalline waters, perfect for peak relaxation.

The Thrill of Fishing

▀  Loreto hosts a large number of fishing tournaments throughout the year. Here, capturing species such as mahi-mahi or tuna for sport allows you to experience the timeless, age-old thrill fishing.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
One of the favorite fishing spots is Juncalito, where, starting in March you can see species such as marlin, swordfish, tuna, jackfish, and sawfish. They can be caught almost all year in during fishing season.

Fishing trips are a tradition in Loreto and are usually complemented by the region’s delicious gastronomy. It is based on fresh, high-quality, locally produced ingredients.

Who Should I Hire?

Its tourist services are one of Loreto’s many points of pride. There are dozens of tour operators that will do their best to give you an adventure that will make you want to come back to the heart of the California soon.
