The Parque Marino Bahía Nacional de Loreto is, without a doubt, one of the richest reserves of marine species, home to more than 30 marine mammals that correspond to 65% of the species found on the coasts of Mexico.

It is a gift for anyone who loves nature, who wants to explore it, admire it, and participate in its purity and grandeur. That is why it could be said that Loreto is one of the most important “base camps” of nature in protected areas in Mexico and—unpretentiously—in the world.

Surprising tours

Sightings Best season: January to March Wildlife: blue whale, sea lions, birds, dolphins.

Whale watching from Loreto is a world-class experience. Mostly calm seas, intimate and safe boats. Each spring, Loreto National Marine Park is home to blue whales, the largest creatures in the world.

You will also see fin whales, humpback whales, many dolphin species, mantas, mobulas, and splendid local and migratory birds.

The California sea lion is a marine mammal that inhabits coastal areas, from tropical, subtropical to temperate zones. Its body is robust with an elongated neck and a narrow face.

Males are larger than females, measuring up to 7ft 10in (2.4m) and weighing 800lbs (363kg), while females are 5ft 10in (1.5m) and weigh 113lbs (113kg).

There are four sighting areas: one located north of Isla Coronados, two north of Isla del Carmen and the other north of Isla Monserrat, on an islet called Las Galeras.

During the tours, the tour operators have everything for you to enjoy to the fullest, for example, they carry out activities such as snorkeling in one of the most beautiful beaches of the Marine Park corresponding to Coronados Island.

TIPS: Keep in mind that the best time to see blue whales starts around the second week of February and ends around March 15th.

Importante: Make sure that the boat you rent has CONANP whale watching permits.

Salt Village in Isla del Carmen

Best season: During the months of April to November, in the mornings.

Lo impactante: The color of the water varies according to the season, going from light blue to intense pink according to the amount of algae and the level of salinity.

From Loreto, it is reached by boat, in a journey of approximately two hours.

It still preserves the vestiges of what used to be the largest salt mine in the world, of natural origin, during its time in operation.

When you are there, it will seem like a ghost town. The first thing that catches your eye is an old lighthouse and a sunken ship. As you walk, you will find old buildings made of fossilized coral; the school, a church, a bank, and houses whose interiors still preserve old objects that were used by the inhabitants.

It is a wildlife conservation area consisting of 37,000 acres of mostly volcanic origin, with contrasting landscapes of mountain, desert, and ocean.

The climate is warm all year round and in its coasts you can find rocky beaches and small cliffs.

The beach normally most visited for snorkeling and picnicking is known as Arroyo Blanco Norte.

Private ranch tours

In Baja California Sur there are small and large ranches, some closer than others to Loreto. But it is very interesting and a great experience to go to them to see the difference between their lives and ours.

There are some tours that will take you to them and give you another perspective of life in the interior of Baja California Sur
